Google DeepMind Offers AI Engineer Jobs Paying Up to $1.1 Million, No Degree Required

Big tech hiring has always followed a predictable playbook. Companies usually demand elite university degrees and grueling algorithmic whiteboard tests before discussing salary.

Google DeepMind is currently throwing that entire script out the window. The AI research powerhouse is actively building an internal unit called Polaris. Its compensation packages are turning heads across Silicon Valley.

Total annual compensation ranges from $550,000 to an eye-watering $1.1 million. However, the pay package is not the only headline grabber. You do not need a college degree of any kind to secure a seat. DeepMind wants a specific breed of problem solver. These engineers will measure how well Gemini handles authentic software engineering workloads.

It represents a massive shift in how top-tier AI companies are valuing raw talent over traditional academic pedigree, reflecting how the silent recruiter is transforming the hiring process in the modern tech landscape.

Evaluating Gemini through hand-crafted engineering hurdles

The Polaris team operates fundamentally differently than the traditional data generation pipelines you might find at other tech giants. Rather than churning out automated, synthetic tests by the millions, engineers on this specialized squad are tasked with meticulously hand-crafting complex evaluations.

Think of it as designing a highly rigorous, graduate-level practical exam tailored specifically for an artificial intelligence agent. Each individual test takes roughly a full week to conceptualize, build, and finalize.

The engineer creates a detailed prompt that dictates a specific, real-world coding task for Gemini to execute, alongside a comprehensive grading rubric to objectively score the model’s attempt.

This painstaking approach ensures the AI is being tested against the chaotic complexity of modern software development rather than sterile, isolated code snippets.

According to a recent Times of India report, the base salary for these Mountain View-based research engineer roles hovers between $164,000 and $252,000, with the massive remainder of the package made up of lucrative equity options.

Engineers joining Polaris will also spearhead entirely new projects aimed at refining Gemini’s training data, continually pushing the boundaries of how we measure actual machine intelligence.

Scrapping LeetCode in favor of vibe coders and pure logic

The traditional tech interview gauntlet is noticeably absent from the Polaris hiring process. Tamay Besiroglu, a data expert at Google DeepMind and former Epoch AI co-founder, made it crystal clear on social media that the team fundamentally does not care about your formal credentials or what university name is stamped on your resume.

On paper, the minimum threshold requires hands-on experience using developer agents and some of the best AI coding assistants for developers, but the real filter during the hiring process is raw intellect.

High-level contest experience in math or programming such as the IMO, IOI, or Putnam definitely helps. Even so, the door stays open for non-traditional candidates. Besiroglu stated that quick learners and skilled vibe coders should apply if they possess real skills.

The team runs an internal interview process and skips standard LeetCode algorithm questions. Instead, they look for lateral thinking. They want people who solve unstructured problems and grasp how AI tools function in the wild. DeepMind will gladly pay top dollar if you can design frameworks that test AI limits.
