Alibaba’s latest AI announcement has quickly caught investors’ attention. The company’s shares climbed as much as 5.4% in Hong Kong and extended gains in US premarket trading after it unveiled Qwen3.8-Max, claiming the new model ranks just behind Anthropic’s Fable 5 among the world’s leading AI systems.
While the market responded immediately, independent verification of that claim is still pending.
Investors Bet on AI Momentum and Apple Partnership
The stock rally wasn’t driven solely by Alibaba’s performance claims. Earlier in the week, Apple received approval to launch Apple Intelligence in China, with Alibaba confirming that its Qwen models will power the local AI experience.
That partnership gives Qwen access to millions of iPhone users, significantly expanding its reach.
Alibaba also introduced promotional pricing for Qwen3.8-Max during its preview period to encourage early adoption. However, the company’s claim that the model ranks second only to Fable 5 currently relies on its own internal testing.
Alibaba has not yet released a detailed model card, benchmark methodology, or independent evaluation results, making outside validation impossible for now.
Competition Is Intensifying in China’s AI Race
The announcement also highlights growing competition within China’s AI ecosystem. Just days before Qwen3.8-Max debuted, Moonshot AI, in which Alibaba owns a significant stake, launched its Kimi K3 model with 2.8 trillion parameters.
Strong demand reportedly forced Moonshot to pause new subscriptions shortly after launch, while benchmark results suggested Kimi K3 competes closely with leading models from Anthropic and OpenAI.
The back-to-back launches underline how rapidly Chinese AI companies are advancing. Even so, Alibaba’s headline claim remains an internal assessment until independent benchmark testing becomes available.
For investors, the immediate excitement reflects both the Apple partnership and optimism around Qwen’s potential, but long-term confidence will ultimately depend on transparent performance data rather than company assertions alone.
