Anthropic is sharpening the focus of its AI for Science initiative by launching a new grant program dedicated to rare disease research, an area where limited patient populations and fragmented medical data continue to slow scientific progress.
The company estimates that more than 400 million people worldwide live with one of over 7,000 known rare diseases, yet many conditions remain poorly understood because researchers lack enough clinical data to study them at scale.
The new program will provide selected researchers with up to $50,000 in Claude API credits over six months, supporting projects that use AI to improve rare disease research and drug development. Applications are open until August 2, 2026.
Two Grant Tracks Target Research and Drug Development
Anthropic has divided the program into two funding tracks. The first focuses on basic scientific research through a partnership with the Monarch Initiative, a consortium that develops open biomedical resources such as the Mondo Disease Ontology and Monarch Knowledge Graph.
Researchers are encouraged to use Claude to analyze case reports, genetic databases, and medical literature to uncover shared disease mechanisms, prioritize potential research directions, and build evaluation benchmarks for AI models. Projects funded under this track must publish their findings publicly through Monarch’s platform.
The second track supports clinical and biotechnology applications, helping organizations accelerate drug discovery and treatment development for rare diseases.
Anthropic highlighted existing collaborations, including Every Cure’s work on AI-powered drug repurposing, the Centre for Population Genomics’ variant classification efforts, and the Violet Research Institute’s use of Claude to prepare regulatory documentation for ultra-rare disease therapies.
Approved projects may also receive access to advanced Claude models with specialized permissions for biological research where appropriate.
Part of Anthropic’s Growing AI Healthcare Strategy
The grant program builds on Anthropic’s broader expansion into life sciences following the launch of Claude Science, its AI platform for researchers, and the acquisition of Coefficient Bio, strengthening its capabilities in AI-assisted drug discovery.
The company has also expanded its healthcare leadership with the appointment of Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board.
Anthropic also acknowledges the limitations of AI in this field. The company notes that AI cannot compensate for missing clinical data or solve healthcare challenges such as insurance approvals and access to diagnostic testing.
Instead, it views the grants as a way to complement ongoing scientific research by helping researchers organize knowledge, identify patterns, and accelerate early-stage discovery rather than replace traditional biomedical research.
