Yes, these facilities use water for cooling towers to prevent the hardware from melting down, but the sheer electricity powering those massive server farms is the primary driver of the technology’s carbon footprint.
An almond orchard actually sequesters carbon as the trees grow. A data center, depending on the local energy grid, is likely burning natural gas or coal to meet its immense power demands.
