Gaganyaan Astronaut Prasanth Nair Says India Must Develop Its Own AI for Cybersecurity

The architecture of modern warfare has shifted completely. Today, geographical borders no longer dictate conflict perimeters. In fact, physical and digital worlds have merged into a single attack surface.

Recently, Indian Air Force Air Commodore and Gaganyaan astronaut Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair spoke at the Kerala Cyber Suraksha Summit 2026. During his address, he bypassed standard IT warnings.

Instead, he issued a direct wake-up call to national leaders. He stated that conventional cybersecurity measures will fail unless India develops sovereign artificial intelligence.

From a defense perspective, this step is an absolute technical necessity. Furthermore, foreign-developed machine learning models introduce critical supply chain risks. Off-the-shelf threat detection tools create similar vulnerabilities. For instance, deep neural networks monitor national power grids, banks, and military networks.

Therefore, national agencies cannot safely route sensitive telemetry through foreign servers. Ultimately, true digital defense requires a localized, natively trained system.

The Mechanics of Sovereign AI in National Defense

Understanding how sovereign AI functions in cybersecurity requires looking directly at data localization and algorithmic autonomy. When a nation relies on third-party AI to scan for zero-day vulnerabilities or ransomware patterns, it is effectively handing over the behavioral blueprints of its digital infrastructure to an external black box.

We cannot fully audit how foreign models process our threat data, nor can we guarantee those models lack baked-in blind spots or backdoors.

A homegrown AI model changes this dynamic. By building an artificial intelligence matrix from the ground up, developers control the training data, the model weights, and the inference code. A sovereign cybersecurity AI is trained specifically on the unique traffic patterns and regional threat vectors targeting Indian institutions.

When an automated cyberattack attempts to cripple critical infrastructure, the indigenous AI analyzes the anomaly and deploys countermeasures entirely on-premises. The telemetry never leaves the country.

It creates a closed-loop defense mechanism where the digital vault is locked by a cryptographic key that no foreign agency possesses.

Bridging the Gap Between Cyberspace and Aerospace

Nair drew a direct technical parallel between aerospace and cyberspace, noting that both are inherently borderless domains demanding absolute technological independence. India proved its capability to execute complex, autonomous engineering with the Chandrayaan missions.

Translating that exact momentum into the digital realm requires pivoting India’s vast human capital the engineers currently driving global software development toward domestic AI infrastructure.

The urgency is measurable. With ransomware attacks surging globally and massive financial losses draining domestic economies through automated cyber fraud, the threat landscape is already heavily weaponized. Adversaries now use offensive AI to launch polymorphic malware that constantly rewrites its own code to evade legacy security software.

To neutralize an algorithmic enemy, a nation requires an algorithmic defender. Developing an indigenous AI ensures the defensive network evolves at the exact speed of the threats targeting it.

It forces a shift from treating cybersecurity as an imported software subscription to treating it as sovereign national infrastructure.
