Nvidia is once again redefining the scale of the artificial intelligence economy. According to recent reports, the chip titan is in advanced discussions to provide up to $250 billion in financing guarantees, effectively throwing its pristine balance sheet behind OpenAI.

The objective is to secure lease agreements for a planned $500 billion, 10-gigawatt data center in southern Ohio spearheaded by SoftBank’s energy arm.

This unprecedented arrangement does more than highlight the staggering capital requirements of next-generation AI infrastructure; it places a giant spotlight on the circular financing mechanisms currently propping up the tech sector’s explosive growth.

The Anatomy of a $500 Billion Infrastructure Play

The proposed Ohio facility is being built on a former federal uranium-enrichment site about 50 miles south of Columbus. Once fully operational, it will provide computing capacity comparable to the output of ten large nuclear reactors.

The first 800-megawatt phase is expected to be completed in 2028. It will make the campus one of the world’s largest AI infrastructure hubs.

The site’s significance is compounded by its unique political footprint. The U.S. government tightly controls access to the required power. Funding is also linked to a recent trade agreement with Japan.

Consequently, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick controls power allocation among aggressive bidders, which reportedly include Google, Anthropic, and Microsoft.

However, the sheer ambition of the SoftBank-led project is accompanied by significant credit hurdles. OpenAI is still a private company and has not achieved consistent profitability. As a result, it does not have the investment-grade credit rating needed to secure debt of this size. Enter Nvidia.

Nvidia is backing the lease and construction costs. This allows SoftBank to raise capital at lower rates by relying on Nvidia’s strong credit profile instead of the tenant’s.

He said Nvidia’s investments and strategic partnerships continue to support confidence in AI infrastructure. However, investors are growing more concerned about the circular financing model.

The foundation, while highly lucrative today, looks fragile to those scrutinizing the underlying mechanics of these megadeals.

Earnings Season and the Threat of a Capex Bust

The timing of these negotiations could not be more sensitive. The broader market is stepping into a pivotal week of Big Tech earnings, where every capital expenditure line item will be heavily audited for immediate returns.

Market patience is wearing incredibly thin; the prevailing question is no longer how much these companies are willing to spend, but when those historic outlays will generate adequate, standalone profitability.

Recent macro warnings add heavy context to these earnings prints. Just last month, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) raised alarms over the systemic risks embedded in the current tech cycle.

The BIS cautioned that any significant disappointment in near-term AI returns could trigger a sudden, violent pullback in financing. This dynamic risks turning a historic capex boom into a protracted investment bust, carrying severe knock-on effects for broader financial conditions.

The institution stressed that a major equity-market correction today could unleash larger macroeconomic consequences than similar events in the past, given the heavy concentration of AI-adjacent equities in major indices.

Financial analysts are openly questioning the longevity of the current spending trajectory. Ed Dowd, writing on the Beyond the Narrative Substack, recently argued that the AI-capex rocket fuel propelling global markets higher may already be burning out. Dowd highlighted several inflection points suggesting the era of blank-check AI infrastructure might be nearing its natural end.

The sheer scale of Nvidia’s potential $250 billion guarantee—which reportedly covers only construction and leases, with separate negotiations for another $350 billion to fund the actual chips—forces a reckoning.

As negotiations between Nvidia and OpenAI evolve, the broader market implications remain impossible to ignore.

Should end-user demand for artificial intelligence fail to justify the half-trillion-dollar price tags of the data centers required to build it, the same circular financing keeping the boom alive could rapidly accelerate its unwinding.
