OpenAI Appoints Indian-Origin Tech Leader as CTO of Compute

OpenAI has promoted Indian-origin engineer Uday Ruddaraju to Chief Technology Officer, Compute, placing him in charge of one of the company’s most critical areas—building and scaling the infrastructure that powers its frontier AI models.

Ruddaraju announced the appointment on LinkedIn, marking just one year since joining OpenAI after leaving Elon Musk’s xAI.

From Hyderabad to Leading OpenAI’s AI Infrastructure

Ruddaraju began his journey at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, where he studied computer science and interned at Amazon Web Services before pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota.

His career includes engineering roles at eBay, Robinhood, and xAI, where he helped build large-scale AI infrastructure during the company’s early expansion.

After joining OpenAI in July 2025, Ruddaraju quickly moved into a leadership role responsible for the compute systems that support training advanced AI models.

His promotion reflects the growing importance of infrastructure expertise as AI companies race to expand computing capacity.

What the CTO of Compute Role Means

Unlike OpenAI’s overall Chief Technology Officer, Barret Zoph, Ruddaraju’s role focuses exclusively on the company’s compute infrastructure.

His responsibilities span large-scale distributed computing, networking, storage, machine learning infrastructure, data center construction, and the hardware systems required to train future AI models.

As AI models become larger and more computationally demanding, access to reliable compute has become one of the industry’s biggest competitive advantages.

OpenAI’s decision to elevate Ruddaraju underscores how infrastructure has become as strategically important as model development itself.

His appointment also highlights the fierce competition among AI companies to recruit and retain engineers capable of building the massive computing platforms that power next-generation AI systems.
