The artificial intelligence boom is frequently discussed through the lens of large language models, agentic workflows, and software orchestration. However, the physical bedrock of these advanced technologies relies heavily on semiconductor manufacturing.
As data centers scale rapidly to manage the intense processing demands of generative AI, the requirement for highly efficient power management and microscopic chip patterning has skyrocketed.
India’s semiconductor ecosystem is currently maturing to meet this unprecedented demand. This evolution extends far beyond basic electronics assembly and chip design.
The domestic supply chain is now pulling in specialty chemical manufacturers to provide the critical materials required for fabrication. Material suppliers often capture significant value in the semiconductor lifecycle due to the recurring need for high-purity inputs.
Specifically, two specialty chemical firms are currently building the specialized infrastructure required to support the hardware side of India’s AI expansion.
By shifting their focus toward critical components like silicon carbide and photoresist chemicals, these companies are positioning themselves at the base of the AI technology stack.
Archean Chemicals: The Silicon Carbide Advantage
Archean Chemical Industries, traditionally known for marine chemicals like bromine and industrial salt, is executing a massive pivot into compound semiconductors.
Through its subsidiary, SiCSem Private Limited, the company is committing ₹2,067 crore to establish India’s first commercial compound semiconductor fabrication and packaging facility in Bhubaneswar.
This new facility focuses exclusively on Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology. Silicon Carbide is a transformative material for AI infrastructure. Unlike standard silicon, SiC offers superior thermal conductivity and operates efficiently at high temperatures and voltages.
These exact properties are mandatory for the power devices and MOSFETs utilized in modern data centers. These facilities require intense thermal management to prevent system degradation during sustained, heavy AI workloads.
The integrated fab aims to produce 60,000 wafers annually, leveraging technology from UK-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd.
While strategic alignment with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) provides up to 75% fiscal support for eligible capital expenditure, the execution timeline remains aggressive. Production must begin within 24 to 27 months from the May 2026 agreement.
The primary challenge for Archean lies in balancing this high-capex semiconductor venture with current operational headwinds, including elevated logistics costs that have recently impacted their traditional bromine business margins.
Acutaas Chemicals: Capitalizing on Photoresist Materials
Acutaas Chemicals is taking a distinctly different route into the AI hardware stack by focusing on semiconductor chemicals, specifically photoresist materials. Photoresists are light-sensitive chemicals used to form sub-microscopic patterns on semiconductor wafers during the lithography process.
Because AI chips require increasingly dense and complex architectures to process data faster, the demand for high-purity photoresist chemicals is experiencing a structural market expansion.
To capture this specific market, Acutaas is constructing a dedicated plant in South Korea under its subsidiary, Indichem. With construction expected to wrap up by the second quarter of FY27, revenue contributions are projected to materialize by FY28.
Management anticipates a gradual three-to-four-year ramp-up period. They are targeting profit margins comparable to their core specialty chemicals segment, which operates at a healthy 24%.
This semiconductor push anchors a broader strategy to shift the company’s overall revenue mix. Acutaas aims to increase its specialty chemicals revenue share from 13% to 20% over the next three years, thereby reducing its heavy reliance on pharmaceutical intermediates.
The financial foundation supporting this transition is highly robust. The company recently reported a 59.1% year-on-year revenue surge in Q1FY27 and maintains a strong return on capital employed (RoCE) of 31.6%.
The main hurdle for Acutaas will be securing stringent customer validation and navigating the rigorous quality control requirements demanded by global chipmakers.
