IIT Dharwad Offers Free 1-Year AI Course with Hostel and Monthly Stipend

The rush to build robust AI applications has exposed a critical bottleneck in the tech industry: a severe shortage of trained deployment engineers and technocrats capable of managing real-world AI architecture

Addressing this skill deficit directly, IIT Dharwad has launched a highly tactical, fully funded one-year residential course in Artificial Intelligence.

Backed by the Ministry of Minority Affairs under the PM VIKAS Scheme 2026-27, this is not a surface-level introductory bootcamp. It is an intensive, government-sponsored infrastructure play designed to generate production-ready AI talent.

For those looking to break into the AI space without the prohibitive costs of private upskilling, this represents a rare, high-leverage entry point into tier-one institutional training.

Eligibility Constraints and Selection Mechanics

The program strictly targets graduates aged 18 to 45 from notified minority communities Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, and Jains. However, the intake mechanics are deliberately structured for broader inclusion and ecosystem building.

A significant 33% of seats are reserved for female candidates. The policy aims to address the gender gap in technology and AI engineering. Another 15% of seats are reserved for candidates from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS). This helps reduce financial barriers to advanced technical education.

The application window is incredibly tight, closing on August 31 via the official pm-vikas.iitdh.ac.in portal. To survive the initial screening process, documentation must be exact.

Candidates must provide their graduation certificate, Class 10 age proof, bank passbook, and the required demographic documents. These include either a Minority community certificate or an EWS certificate.

Standard identity verification through an Aadhaar card and passport-sized photographs are also mandatory baseline requirements for the application packet.

The Residential Advantage and Deployment Support

What separates this initiative from the thousands of self-paced online AI certificates is the environmental design.

Becoming an Artificial Intelligence Technocrat (officially coded as ICE/ITS/Q0201) requires deep, uninterrupted focus on complex subjects like system orchestration, large language model deployment and output reliability.

The program engineers this focus through its residential format. Selected candidates receive free boarding and lodging directly at the IIT Dharwad campus. This immersive setting removes external friction, allowing trainees to focus entirely on building practical AI implementation skills.

Beyond the free tuition and housing, the financial architecture of the program heavily incentivizes completion. Trainees receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This helps cover everyday expenses.

Beyond free tuition and housing, the program also provides financial support to encourage trainees to complete the course. Trainees receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This helps cover everyday expenses.

Support continues after graduation. Those who earn government-recognized Sector Skill Council (SSC) certification receive two months of post-placement assistance. Successfully placed candidates can also receive an additional Rs 4,000 to cover relocation and professional setup costs.

This creates a complete pathway from funded residential training to career placement. It also gives graduates financial support as they move into the workforce.
